Mike Cyze , Council Member

Mike Cyze and his wife, Amanda, moved to Asbury shortly after they were married five and a half years ago.

They chose to live in the Maple Hills Subdivision because of the quiet feeling of the neighborhood.

“The people were all very friendly and we decided it would be a wonderful place to begin a family,” said Mike.

Mike is from the Dubuque area and is the Executive Director of Communication at his alma mater Clarke College where he holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication and a Master of Business Administration Degree. His responsibilities include managing the external affairs efforts of the college including public relations, marketing and creative services.

He decided to run for council because he wants to help create the best possible future for the City of Asbury.

Mike was the top vote getter in the election held November 3 and has already started his term as he was sworn in at the City Council Meeting held November 10.

“I look forward to getting to know the council members, city staff and citizens of Asbury as we work together to ensure a vibrant future for our city,” said Mike after winning his seat on the council.

His hobbies include traveling, photography and getting involved with home improvement projects.

Curt Kiessling , Council Member

Curt Kiessling is originally from Baltimore, Md. He moved to eastern Iowa in 1990 and finally decided to call Asbury home in 1999.

“My friend was thinking about buying a house in Asbury and he asked me to inspect it for him,” said Curt. “I informed him that it was a nice house with a lot of potential, but it needed a lot of work.”

His friend decided not to buy the house, so that left the door open for Curt to put a bid in on the house and he’s lived there ever since.

Curt decided to run for City Council because he figured it was time to get more involved in local politics.

“Two years ago when Jim Adams was running for mayor, I was on the sidewalk committee and he asked me if I was interested in running for council. I wasn’t ready then, but I’m ready now,” said Curt. “Plus, I want to serve the residents of this community.”

Curt, who served in the Marine Corps, is currently self-employed as a contractor specializing in flooring and carpentry.

In his spare time, he likes to ski and play golf.

John Richey , Council Member

John Richey has lived in his home on Sandwedge Court for over eight years, but became a citizen of Asbury just a year ago when the subdivision was annexed into the city December 2008.

It’s because of the annexation process that motivated John to run for City Council.

“I had a strong desire to serve the community,” said John. “I am really excited about getting started.”

John will get his chance to get going when his term starts January 1, 2010.

He’s originally from the Dubuque area and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from Clarke College. He’s currently employed by John Deere as a supervisor.

John has been married to his wife, Kris, for 36 years and they have three grown children.

In his free time, John enjoys golfing at The Meadows Golf Club, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren.
